Nakations – Holidays For Nudists

When hikers speak of exposure they are usually referring to open mountain slopes or cliff-top paths. But in Germany’s Harz Mountains the concept is about to get a novel new definition, with a trail geared for nudist walkers to open in May.

The path will stretch 18 kilometres between the towns of Dankerode and Wippertalsperre.

The idea follows a recent ban on naked hiking in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, imposed largely in response to the number of German visitors stripping off on the region’s trails to experience nature in the full state of nature.

In Germany, the new hiking trail is another milestone in a long-established tradition of naturism. The country’s nudist Freikorperkultur (FKK) movement, a term translating as “free body culture”, is said to have around 45,000 members. In Munich’s Englischer Garten, naked lunchtime sunbathing is routine.

The tour operator Oboena specialises in naturism holidays, from lounge-about resorts to Mediterranean cruises. Last year plans were announced for the country’s first all-nudist hotel in the Black Forest town of Freudenstadt.

Disrobing for a holiday is not, however, a uniquely German experience, with so-called “nakations” becoming more mainstream across the world.

The American Association for Nude Recreation has estimated the industry’s value at about $US400 million ($444 million) a year.

On the French Atlantic coast, near the town of Le Porge, there is a six-hole golf course for the use of guests at the La Jenny naturist resort. In 2003, a one-off clothing-optional flight from Miami to Cancun was arranged by Naked Air, with about 90 passengers paying $US500 to take off their clothes as the plane took off.

But still the holiday opportunities for nuding up continue to grow. In the US a company called Bare Necessities Tour and Travel charters cruise ships for clothing-optional sea voyages, taking up to 2000 people at a time to places such as Hawaii, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

And if being naked above the water isn’t enough, there’s always Buff Divers, a travel club that organises clothing-optional diving trips. It claimed a world record for most nude divers in the water at a time – 72 people in the Turks and Caicos Islands in 2001.

By necessity, the club’s activities are held in tropical waters, with half of the participants usually choosing to dive in wetsuits and half in birthday suits.

Perhaps you prefer naked archery? Or naked yoga? Or, back in naturism’s German heartland, there’s the naked bike rides, or nacktradler, organised around Bavaria on summer weekends.

Ad Feedback In Australia, where they are traditionally more shy about revealing what they have “down under”, the options are less varied. Even so, the Australian Nudist Federation lists more than 50 affiliate naturism resorts and venues from far north Queensland to the fringes of suburban Perth.

If nothing else, a nakation makes packing a whole lot simpler. Just don’t forget the sunscreen.

Judge Rules: Naked Cyclist Not Offensive

Naked cyclist Nick Lowe has successfully appealed against a conviction and fine for riding his bike nude near Upper Hutt.

Mr Lowe was convicted of offensive behaviour and fined $200 and $130 court costs after he was stopped by police while riding his bike naked on the Akatarawa Rd, north of Upper Hutt on March 15 last year – ‘World Nude Bike Day’.

A female motorist had complained to police after seeing him and later told the court she was ”fairly disgusted” when she saw him.

Mr Lowe appealed the conviction to the High Court.

In a ruling released today, Justice Clifford said Mr Lowe’s nakedness had not met the test of offensive behaviour and he quashed the conviction and fine.

Mr Lowe, a builder from Johnsonville, completed last year’s Coast to Coast naked from the waist down, and regularly trains in the buff.

He told The Dominion Post when he filed the appeal: “It’s a lifestyle thing – to put clothes on is uncomfortable. It’s not about exhibitionism, I’m just uncomfortable in clothes.”

Nude Beach Etiquette

I’ll never forget the first (and only) time I visited a nude beach. I was new here…..just moved up from California. Having grown up in a beach town, I missed the beach soooo much more that I thought I would. My friends took me to a beach (can’t remember the name) on the Columbia and we went for a long walk…..a really long walk…..and somehow, we missed the clothing optional sign….but we certainly could not miss the guy who had opted for no clothes that day! Being caught by surprise, I’m sure we broke the important “no gawking” rule…but did you know there are other rules of etiquette when visiting a nude beach? If you’re planning a trip to Rooster Rock or Sauvie Island once the weather warms up….read & learn!

Leave your dog HOME! Dogs like to sniff strangers. Enough said.

Gawking is impolite. If you want to go to the nudist beach for a thrill, do everyone a favor and buy a magazine instead.

Ask for people’s consent before taking their photograph nude.

If you’re sunbathing nude in a secluded area, leave a bathing suit on a rock to let others know they are approaching an unclothed person. If you’re uncomfortable having your suit out of reach, bring a spare.

On a wide open beach, position yourself in the open so you can see people coming and put something on before they get there if you need to.

Get dressed before you leave the nudist beach.

Be friendly, but respect others’ rights to privacy.

Avoid sexual activity. It’s illegal and offensive.

Advances of an unwelcome or unwanted nature are not acceptable anywhere, and especially at a nudist beach.

Be Prepared. Sometimes, the nudist beach doesn’t have any amenities. Bring water, food, towel, sunscreen and anything else you need.

Keep the nudist beach clean. If you carried it in, carry it back out.

Nude Cyclist Gets Gear Off In The Bay

A naturist who successfully appealed a conviction for riding his bike nude in Upper Hutt is set to take to the roads again – this time in Hawke’s Bay.

Nick Lowe, who is president of the Hawke’s Bay Naturist Club but hails from Wellington, was convicted and fined $200 for riding his bike nude in Upper Hutt on March 15 last year.

But he appealed his conviction and it was quashed by Justice Denis Clifford who noted Mr Lowe’s nudity had not met the test of offensive behaviour.

Mr Lowe will be back in the saddle on March 13 for World Naked Bike Ride Day for a ride from Bay View Pub to Tongoio picnic area, a distance of 14.5km.

For motorists and pedestrians not wishing to be startled or confronted by the flesh, there will be a trailer travelling in front towing a sign warning of “nude cyclists ahead”.

Mr Lowe said he was not thumbing his nose at the authorities and his nude cycling had been “tested in law”.

He had sharp words for anyone taking offence. “They need something bigger and better in their life to worry about. Anyone who says the human body is offensive has a problem.”

The ride starts at 2pm from the Bayview pub carpark. Anyone is welcome on bicycle, motorbike or car – but you must be naked.
