Body Freedom Day: When a Clothed-Minded World Unraveled

The main premise of Body Freedom Day is that it is a book from the future (2056). Author Ward’s clever little device makes the book a delightful read. He starts with a bit of naturist history, bringing the reader up to 2005. Then, he moves into future territory, marking the beginning of the Body Freedom movement as taking place in San Francisco (where else?).

I hadn’t read far, when I noticed a little device author Ward used to add authenticity to the futuristic claim. It was a small affectation but I found it delightful. Since the book was claimed to have been written in 2056, certain more modern word forms were used–words like thru, enuf, tho, altho, nite, and the like. It makes sense. Why wouldn’t words with useless extra letters eventually be changed in the future?

For a naturist, Body Freedom Day is a delight. It makes one long for the day when clothes will cease to be the mandatory condition of society in general. To be able to walk out the front door on a fine summer’s day in the state one left the shower (only dry), to go for a walk, or to drive somewhere on an errand, would be a treat indeed. As you read this book, you start asking yourself, “Why not?” Why not be able to go anywhere without clothing if the weather dictates? Why not be accepted as a person regardless of our state of dress?

From the start, it’s clear that author Ward is a public lands type of naturist. All of the references he uses in Body Freedom Day’s bibliography are from The Naturist Society’s N Magazine. In addition, a portion of the book’s royalties will go to select body freedom organizations.

I don’t necessarily agree with every premise author Ward makes in his extrapolation of the future but I surely had fun on the ride. The writing style is light and humorous and clips along at a merry pace. By the time you get to the end, you’ll be convinced that a clothes-free society is not only a possibility, it’s almost a foregone conclusion. Pick up a copy of Body Freedom Day to read on your next trip to the beach. Better yet, make it a clothing-optional beach.

Family Nudes by Ralf Mohr

I like the idea of this collection very much–photographs of families who are comfortable enough with themselves and each other to be nude. For many viewing these pictures, there would be an apprehension that the models would be sexualized in some way but Mohr has avoided this, to his credit. Instead, there is something about the openness you have to have to be photographed like this that is very relaxing. There seems to be a complete lack of guile in these pictures.

I am curious about his choice to stick to pair groupings in most of his photographs–mother/child or father/child–rather than entire family groups. Perhaps this helps keep attention more focused on the models and their relationship rather than diluting it among more people; however, I would have been interested to see some of the larger dynamics.

As for the photos themselves, they are varied and often stunningly beautiful. Mohr works with normal people but achieves wonderful results, all the more so because his models look human, perhaps. The fact that the coloring of his photos is never natural does get a bit old after extended viewing and the switch between various coloring styles occasionally strikes as a bit odd but, for the most part, this is a small complaint. Mohr has done something wonderful here.

Although this is not a large book, it is a surprisingly complete introduction to the subject.

I just got this book in the mail today and had to come back to write a review on it. This book is a must-have and it definitely brings out the best in the women of color it displays with a good range of women posing. Who would guess that a book of nudes would showcase inner beauty? Marc Baptiste accomplishes this fluidly all throughout this book. From Lisa Raye to Jenny Baptiste to ‘Untitled’ – all of these women display the richness in the variety of our women of color. This book is a must!

True Confessions of Nude Photography: A Step-by-Step Guide

This book goes way beyond being another posing guide. It takes you through all the steps you need to know to photograph nudes. I got mine last week and read it cover to cover. It was like talking to a seasoned pro willing to mentor the new guy. The lighting diagrams and detailed explanations alone were enough to make this book worth buying. I scheduled my 1st ever nude session this week because of what I learned in this book. I now have the confidence and know I won’t mess everything up and will know how to handle the shoot.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who truly wants to shoot beautiful nudes.

The latest photography offering from DK Publishing (Dorling Kindersley) is a glossy treatise on mastering the art of nude photography, from selection an approach to perfecting your chosen techniques and post-production tips and tricks. Author Pascal Baetens is a Belgian jack-of-all-trades who has specialized in portrait, fashion, travel, and nude photography in a range of industries (editorial, commercial, and private). The Baetens DK Nude Photography course opens with a historical perspective, followed by a lush academic discussion of nude photography styles. The meat of the book are sections on photography techniques (composition, lighting, posting, locations) and post-production (cropping, reframing, filtering, retouching).

This oversized 250+ page hardcover concludes with a gallery of nude photography featuring the works of ten international artists, accompanied by biographical information, artist’s notes, first-person essays, and behind-the-scenes set photos. Works of dozens of renowned artists appear throughout the instructional pages of this text, rendering it well-deserving of the cover price.

Outdoor Glamour Photography: The Complete Digital Guide to Taking Successful Outdoor Glamour Photographs

If you’re interested in outdoor glamour photography, this could be one of the most useful books you’ll ever read. Lemon’s book is packed full of specific and practical tips for experienced photographers alongside beautifully artistic sample photographs taken by Lemon himself.

Lemon opens with a brief introduction that gives an overview of some of his general techniques: he details how he uses his light meter, how he measures and perfects white balance, and why he shoots in fine JPEG as opposed to a raw format.

The rest of the book consists of photos accompanied by information about how Lemon set up and achieved various effects in the shoot. For each photograph, Lemon explains the lighting used, why the location was chosen, and information about the pose chosen for the model. A small sidebar box gives the camera, lens, shutter speed, and F-stop used. Woven throughout Lemon’s descriptions are helpful tips on every imaginable aspect of photography from how to best use a polarizing filter to how to take into account texture and color when choosing a background for a model.

The photos included in the book are spectacular. All feature female models in various stages of undress (from completely nude to fully clothed) posed against every possible background–woods, grassy fields, old logs, rusted pick-ups, barns, haystacks, and corrugated metal walls. Most of the pictures are a full page in size; a few are impressive two-page spreads. Some of the photos may strike photographers as a bit too Playboy in style, but for the most part, they are tasteful and quite artistic. Lemon is clearly a talented photographer and Outdoor Glamour Photography gives enough information to help aspiring photographers benefit from his wealth of experience.
