  • Active Nudists: Living Naked at Home and in Public [Hardcover]

Many books on naturism contain many photos, like this one does. But in many others—not this one—the photos are an excuse to look at attractive women and the text is discardable. In Richard Foley’s book, the photos may be mostly of women but there are many of men, and the text is not just essential but very engaging. The writing dissolves all the myths about nudity in public while sensibly and artfully showing how, where, and why it’s not just useful and fun but socially and psychologically important and valuable.

The book relates in images and words activities centered around beaches and riversides, canoe and boat tours, bicycle tours, horse riding, hiking tours, home and garden, humans and the elements, art and expression, the media, and public events. Even if you have no interest in any of these, you will see them all become simpler, more direct, and worthier when the people at or in them are clothesfree. Life becomes more vivid, and the clothes we wear become not just unimportant but often an impediment.

It’s okay to wear clothes. It’s okay not to. The latter is especially true for children; that no one in the book is identifiably under 18 is its only drawback. (Photos of naked minors do not increase crime against them; that myth has been disproved repeatedly by much research over the past 40 years.)

This is a splendid book: wise, witty, and to the point, with a variety and thoroughness that both delight and enlighten.

  • Au Naturel [Paperback]

Woycke’s book is the only developed discussion of the history of Canadian nudism available in English. He provides a detailed account of the development of nudist clubs and clothing-optional beaches across Canada. Not a naturist himself, he has no particular agenda, other than to present a scholarly and readable history of non-sexualized social nudity in Canada. The footnotes took up nearly half of the original manuscript, so the publisher decided to place them online free of charge, rather than to include them with the text. “Au Naturel: The History of Nudism in Canada” is on a par with Cec Cinder’s “The Nudist Idea” from Ultraviolet Press. Together, they give an accurate and informative portrayal of the quirkly world of nudism in North America.

  • A Brief History of Nakedness [Hardcover]

I’d first heard of this book in a review on line back in May ‘10. It came up in a search on Spencer Tunick, the American photographic artist who covers landscapes in both rural and urban setting in nude humans to create a very diverse body of work(pun intended)as well as individual portraits. The review I read was positive and said that Mr. Carr-Gomm did cover Spencer’s works and a whole lot more. I left a comment on the review as a participant in Spencer’s art and was surprised to find Mr. Carr-Gomm replied. I was hooked, and resolved to buy the book when I could afford it. Shortly after I was able to order a copy through Amazon. Couldn’t wait to read it! Yes, I said “read”. Not that there are not a lot of photos. Really very good ones, and many NSFW, so be warned. It is beautifully and thouroughly illustrated. But this book is an in depth look at the history of us humans in the raw from the start till the present. Mr Carr-Gomm gives a look at humans and nudity/nakedness in religion, culture, politics, theater, music and of course, art. Wherever we humans go, whatever we do we decide on what clothes we must wear – or if not, why not. Mr. Carr-Gomm has done a lot of research and given a lot of thought to the history and taboo of nudity. And he makes it a good read with much humor and affection through out.

It never becomes dry or tedious nor does it pander to the salacious. If you are looking for porn, you will be disappointed. Not to say he does not speak of sex. How can you not in a book about naked people? His point is that our skin is about so much more than sex. I would add that this is Spencer Tunick’s point as well, and Philip Carr-Gomm gives Spencer’s work a good deal of credit for changing the minds of a lot of people about nude bodies. Do I have any negatives about the book? Only a couple, one a very personal nit-pick. Mr. Carr-Gomm mentions Cleveland OH as one of Spencer’s installations- But he doesn’t have a photo of it! I’m not in the book! The second, and rather more substantial, is the index. There is a good index, I just wish it were a bit more extensive. Though as this is not a textbook I can understand.

If you are curious about the human need to be uncovered, which seems to be as strong in some ways as to be covered, I highly reccommend “A Brief History of Nakedness”. Maybe someone who is a bit unsure of how they feel about the naked body will gain a new perspective. Meanwhile I guess I will have to wait till Spencer’s much anticipated book to see more of his work, and so I can say “See, I’m in there somewhere.”.

  • Art Models 5: Life Nude Photos for the Visual Arts (Art Models series) [Hardcover]

    0001

The Art Models books and cds are the best products of this kind available to public! What a great tool for artist who can’t afford to pay a live model! Both male and female poses are wonderful and the most dynamic that I have seen in a book or website of this kind! The photos are much larger and have extremely more detail then all other books of this kind available. Next best thing to having a live model! With all the Art Models products, both the male and female body is seen as beautiful and celebrated. None of the male or female poses are censored and both male and female viewers are treated as equals. Just a wonderful tool for artist!

  • The Mammoth Book of New Erotic Photography [Paperback]

Maxim Jakubowski has a tough job. Nearly every five years he is faced with the daunting task of combing through thousands of photographs of naked women to find the ones distinctive enough to make the cut in books like this third volume of his “Mammoth Book of New Erotic Photography.” (Can you detect our sarcasm?)

Featuring a humongous list of famed international photographers, Jakubowski has sought to showcase the work of photographers whose work cannot be described merely as sexy or sensual, but rather, stylish, artful and in many cases, edgy. Beyond the mini-portfolios of about 75 photographers, there are descriptive introductions to each lensman’s (and several lenswomen’s) work.

Getting into the heads of each photographer is part of Jakubowski’s mission and for those wishing to use these pages as an introduction to more of the photographer’s portfolio, each section has a weblink for digging deeper into the vault.

While the concept of a large international compendium of this photography is certainly a worthy tool, the small size format (especially given the word `mammoth’ in the title) of the pages only begs the question of just how impressive this work would be in a larger format. In a word… very.

  • Megan Hart’s Naked

I admit this is the first book I read twice before I started to review it. First time I was too enthralled to make any notes and the only thing I could say about it afterwards was WOW. That would have been a really short review so I started it again and forced myself to take breaks and write down what I thought. Long list and now I’m trying to get the things in order for you.

Naked is finally Alex Kennedy’s book but that’s by far not the only reason I loved it. I waited so long for his HEA and I knew the moment I had the ebook that I couldn’t wait any second longer to start it. And I loved every word written in it. It’s hard to explain but this book was for me one big OMG-So-Good-Moment. I couldn’t stop and I wanted more at the end. I enjoyed reading it twice and today Caroline told me she started it and I thought: “You have to read it again.” That’s how much I loved it.

Naked is written out of Olivia Mackey’s POV. She is a woman with a past. Olivia got burned by a man in the past. She was hurt but still couldn’t cut all the emotional strings attaching her to him. She knows she should but you know how that can go- it can be hard to let go. But when she meets Alex she sees the potential even if she’s still cautious about the danger he represents. She decides to grab her chance for happiness. She developed a method to avoid being hurt: just don’t ask about the uncomfortable things. She is still insecure but which girl wouldn’t be after that last relationship. Olivia is strong at heart and she works hard to get what she wants. She still tries to find her way in life and sometimes she feels a bit lost in the middle of everything.

Alex is still Mr. Mysterious but he shows more of his vulnerabilities in this novel (we met him for the first time in Tempted). He tries hard to be seen as more than a world travelling gay guy. He wants to be seen as the character he is, as a person who deserves the complete focus, love and adoration of someone- no sharing for him anymore. He is such a caring and loving character- sure he has his quirks from time to time too but most of his actions are based on his yearning for acceptance, appreciation and love. He’s says the sweetest things and he totally melted my heart to a puddle of goo. I love him and I know I want an Alex of my own. *dreams*

Besides our couple Naked is full of other great characters. I adore Sarah, Olivia’s BFF. She’s one of the funniest persons ever and she made me laugh so hard that I had tears in my eyes. I just say Cunnilingus Phone Survey. We also meet some characters from former novels again and I’m always squeeing when I read about those. They all found a place in my heart and it makes me smile to see them happy or on the way to get there. ;)

The story focuses on family, homosexuality and religion- and how they influenced Olivia. All can be touchy topics but Mrs. Hart handles them great. I loved how she explained Olivia’s way of finding her own religion. She showed how hard it is to find what fits you best. Being agnostic, or whatever it’s called, myself I usually don’t appreciate much religious talk but she never ventured into the preaching site of it- she just told about experience and not about how to convert someone. She also included some rather sensitive family problems. She made me think about myself and my life again and that’s one of the main reasons why I love her books so much. And she has those wonderful Star Trek and Douglas Adams references I adore so much.

Naked is a very sexy thought provoking novel. The writing is outstanding and the characters will draw you in from the start. Naked made me laugh, think and cry and I loved every second of it. When you want a book that will touch you deep inside and entertain you the whole time this is the book for you. I’m sure it will be at the top of my Best Reads in 2010 list. An absolute Keeper and I’m sure I will talk about this book for a long time to come.

  • Uncovered: Bare Facts About Nude Recreation [Kindle Edition]

    0001

Robert Miskimon takes you on a journey into the world of the nudist. Learn just who these nudists really are, and what they care about. For instance, can you bring your camera to a nude beach? The answer may surprise you.

Through the pages of this ebook you will meet real nudists like Cheri, who tells of her first experience on a nude beach. “Naturism or nudism is about accepting yourself and others for who you are and not for what you look like, own or wear. We are doctors, lawyers, businessmen and women, kitchen workers, state employees, mothers, fathers, teens, infants, grandparents, your friends and neighbors. Nudism is the great human equalizer, with people of all ages, from infancy to people older than 70, communicating on the same level with no one judging others,” Cheri explains.

From the prehistoric origins of nudism, to modern-day practices, Miskimon illustrates how this custom has evolved.

Many people have never heard that the original Olympic Games were played in the nude. You’ll also enjoy reading how the early nudists in America had to struggle to exercise their preference to be unencumbered by clothing. It wasn’t an easy lifestyle to establish, with some issues regarding nudists even being taken all the way to the Supreme Court.

You’ll hear from important publications like the North American Guide to Nude Recreation, which states, “One reason why a nude lifestyle is so refreshing is that it delivers us temporarily from the game of clothes. It’s hard to imagine how much clothing contributes to the grip of daily tensions until we see what it’s like to socialize without them. Clothing locks us into a collective unreality that prescribes complex responses to social status, roles and expected behaviors. In shedding our daily ‘uniforms’, we also shed a weighty burden of anxieties. For a while, at least, we don’t have to play the endless charade of projected images we call ‘daily life.’ For once in your life you are part of a situation where age, occupation and social status don’t really count for much. You’ll find yourself relating more on the basis of who you are really instead of who your clothes say you are.”

Also included is a personal success story from Melissa, a victim of child abuse. Follow her journey out of fear and anxiety towards a feeling of body-acceptance and confidence, thanks to her support group without clothing. Her ‘nude diary’ chronicles her transformation from sexual victim to a leadership role in a newly-founded nudist club.

Beautiful photos throughout this book illustrate how luxurious and relaxing a nudist lifestyle can be, thanks to the images provided by Caliente Resort in Tampa, Florida. From nude tennis and volleyball to nude dining, swimming, exercise and massage, each photo shows just how enjoyable a nudist vacation can be for the traveler looking to unwind.

This ebook is chock full of first-time nudist stories, and also includes statistics and poll results to show the depth of support nudists receive in the general community. For instance, did you know a Martini and Rossi poll in 1990 reported that 35 percent of Americans would take off all their clothes on a nude beach? Or that tourist officials say requests for nude or topless beaches are among the top five priorities of international convention-goers? Read this book and you’ll begin to understand why.
