  • Naked truth about Nude Hotel in Mexico

Zipolite, Mexico — Naturally, one wonders, just how nude is The Nude Hotel.

The short answer is that the word nude in the hotel’s official name, Nude Bungalows and Sky Lounge, refers more to the birthday-suit bathers on the Pacific Coast beach on which the business is located than to the state of undress of its in-house clients.

Nudity is permitted in all areas of the hotel, except the beachside restaurant. There, at least put on a sarong. You wouldn’t want to drip some fiery Mexican chilies on sensitive body parts.

But most hotel clients tend to be clothed, except when sunning on their balconies, taking a plunge into the small, but cute, backyard pool or swimming in the ocean at high tide, a mere 20 metres or so away.

The Nude, as many Zipolite regulars call the place, is a series of new, gleaming white structures with thatched roofs located on what is Mexico’s only officially nude beach.

Well, maybe the word official is not quite accurate. Perhaps one can say Zipolite is Mexico’s only tolerated public nude beach. North Americans, Europeans and a growing number of Mexicans are shedding their clothes to suntan on this 1.5-kilometre stretch of sand about an hour away from the airports of the much larger cities of Puerto Escondido and Huatulco. (There are also several private naturist resorts, mainly on the Caribbean coast along what is called the Mayan Riviera.)

The sign on the front of the hotel, with the word Nude in tall letters, is a favourite with shutterbugs, especially Mexican ones. You can’t come to Zipolite and not get your picture taken in front of the Nude sign perched above the sunbathers lazing on the swinging beds placed in front of the hotel.

Yes, swinging beds. The beds give the hotel something of an air of splendid decadence. Is there anything more sinfully luxurious than resting, with or without your bathing suit, on a roof-covered swinging bed while sipping a margarita and checking your email via the free Wi-Fi? At night, the area is lit, just barely, by burning torches stuck in the sand. You begin to wonder when the Roman-style orgy will start.

The hotel’s best rooms are the four that face the ocean. The second-floor ones offer the most privacy and have spectacular decks the size of a modest Mexican home. There, one can while away the day listening to the constant roar of the breaking surf and watching the many birds that nest in the area. The scenery also, of course, includes a constant parade of tourists, both clothed and unclothed, taking their daily constitutional.

In the back of the hotel grounds are eight rooms in four thatched-roof bungalows. The ones closest to the front and on the second floor get the most ocean breeze. And, like most hotels in Zipolite, there are fans but no air conditioning, so that breeze is most welcome.

The beachside restaurant, like most of the neighbouring ones, consists of tables and chairs on the sand. A bamboo roof protects diners from the sun.

The food is typical of most low-budget Mexican tourist hotels, with the usual steak, beef and tortilla-based recipes. Try the breakfast burritos encasing scrambled eggs, black beans and ham or bacon. The plate comes with a green salad and is also perfect for lunch.

More adventuresome diners head a few doors to the east to Posada de Mexico, which serves great Italian fare. Another Zipolite favourite is El Alquimista, about 100 metres to the west of The Nude. That popular beachside restaurant offers both Mexican and Continental dining. The bruschettas with such ingredients as Serrano ham, figs, blue cheese, pecans, pesto and other very un-Mexican mixtures are a hit.

Zipolite became famous in the 1960s as a haven for nudist hippies. Accommodations were often no better than chicken coops. Today, the beach is populated by superannuated hippies, diehard European naturists and young backpackers. Accommodations have improved but remain overwhelmingly ramshackle. The Nude is definitely a cut above, but still far below package-tour standards. So don’t arrive expecting reliable hot water, turndown service and the like. Do expect friendly staff, great views and as nude an experience as you want.

  • Naked in Vermont – An October Visit To Abbott’s Glen Inn Reveals Foliage and Fun

I didn’t know that I needed this break. I had no idea, in the enjoyably cool weather of fall in New England, that I’d crave the chance to be free, naked and bathing in the sun in Southern Vermont. But I did. And what a break it turned out to be!

Abbott’s Glen Inn is in West Halifax, at the very southern part of the Green Mountain State. For seven years they have cultivated a loyal following of part time nudists who come there for the delectable food, beautiful grounds, conversation, and yes, a little naked dancing too. They offer tent sites and seven rooms inside in various configurations at different levels of comfort.
Guests and hosts alike shared the phrase “It’s exotic, not erotic,” and “the two-minute rule of nudist living.” And it’s true that after just a few minutes, the prurience disappears and you no longer really care what your body looks like.

You’re much more interested in that plate of cumin infused roast pork, or the chance to sit in an Adirondack chair in front of a pretty lake and let it all hang out. Literally and figuratively.

    57 Acres to Wander

The property is about 57 acres, and a woodland stream winds along the edge of the forest. There are well-marked hiking trails that take you over to the stream, and at the trail’s end a delightful circular sunning area is cut out of the weeds.

Just before you get there, a bridge with a little bell on it sounds when anyone is approaching. How convenient!

Abbott’s Glen reminds of me what I’d have hoped that my old prep school would be set up like. With sylvan glades protected from the faculty to tryst in, and a sunny circle of chairs where everybody can relax naked and read a book or talk. And no homework, just the assignment to get to know your fellow nudists and share your interests and relax.

The buildings are all reclaimed from the original farm. The carriage house has guest rooms, a large living room with a wood stove for hanging out, wine tastings and the evening dance parties.
Hiking in the lush woods of Southern Vermont… naked or clothed, it’s great. Actually, naked is better. Hiking in the lush woods of Southern Vermont…naked or clothed, it’s great. photo by Max Hartshorne.

Right across a path is the main building with upstairs guestrooms, kitchen and the dining room which looks out at the pond.

In addition, the big hot tub is in this building along with spacious stone floored bathrooms and multi person showers (one co ed and one for women only.)

The carriage house bedrooms utilize these bathrooms, so if you want to be able to walk from bed to toilet, you would want to be in a different building. For warm weather an outdoor shower is available for getting clean au naturel right in nature.

    A Party of 20

Amy Abbott and Lindy Abbott met decades earlier at another naturist resort, and remet when they both lived in Burlington Vermont. Eight years ago, and both decided to pursue a mutual dream when they found land in Halifax, three hours south of the small capital city.

There were quite a few repeat guests like Maryanne, who said, “Amy and Lindy really foster an environment of comfort and ease. My husband and I love it here!”
A cheese tasting in the carriage house, another example of the Inn’s famous culinary tradition. A cheese tasting in the carriage house, another example of the Inn’s famous culinary tradition.

The youngest guests were a couple in their 20s; a nurse and a flooring installer from Springfield, Massachusetts, who keep a pop-up tent camper here and come most every weekend.

There were a few couples in their 70s who travel to many naturist resorts and always come back to Abbott’s Glen. Among the three PhD university psychology professors, one is the head of his department. The couple of financial advisors drove over from New York State and had to be back Monday for the opening of the stock exchange. Interesting conversation is guaranteed.

A man named Don from Connecticut who works for the post office told us he’d been to Abbott’s Glen twenty times with his wife and each time they met dozens of people that they really enjoyed talking with.

Was it the nakedness that created an open-ness among the guests? I think it has something to do with it.

    Caters to Couples

The resort caters to couples, and in an environment like this, Lindy Abbott said that single males aren’t always a good fit.

“They start chasing the few unattached young women around, and that isn’t good.” A young female employee chimed in. “Not so good!” Like the Abbotts, she socializes with the guests, dancing naked with the crowd, so it’s just better not to inject the single male’s energy into a coupled crowd. This isn’t the place to meet a date, but it’s sure a great place to take one!

Of course, everyone to me looked terribly normal; no one stood out in any way. (I’m not sure why they would, but it crossed my mind for some reason).

Dinner dress varied, most of the men wore their terrycloth robes (supplied by the resort) and let them slip down the chair, and most of the women wore shorts and nothing on top. Nobody came to the table or most anywhere else fully clothed.

Unlike in many other nudist resorts, at Abbott’s Glen, the food is a key selling point. It’s very, very good, but not fussy or pretentious. Hosts Amy and Lindy pride themselves on making their guests feel comfortable and creating an atmosphere of relaxed decadence. More chocolate cake anyone?

Friday nights is pizza night, made using a wood-fired maple sugar boiler, refitted with pizza stones. In the spring, Lindy makes maple syrup from trees on the property. After pizza there is a bonfire. The wood-fired sauna building is right there for your pleasure, any time.

Saturday night dinners are special occasions, with linens, candles and a bounteous spread. Guests can bring their own wine and beer, and it’s a sit-down affair for all 20 guests. Local produce and meats are used extensively. They are happy to uncork your wine or bring you the right glasses for a beer.

    Dancing Naked

After a dinner that lasts a few hours, enjoying conversation with our newfound naked friends, guests can adjourn to the carriage house across from the main building. Here, with a brightly blazing fire in the woodstove, a top quality sound system provides the music for dancing.

Dancing in front of a fire is always a treat. But mixing in topless women, joyous naked men to the pulsing beat, and well, now you’ve got a party! The liberation of dance and the feeling of being free to shake your booty, move your hips and wave your arms are magnified with everyone nude. I think this experience deserves a place on more people’s bucket lists!

Amy Abbott told us some of the ways that the resort deals with its toughest problem: the cold. In some ways it is more of a perception issue than a reality, but when people mention Vermont, getting naked isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.

“In January we sit outside in a living room that is formed by erecting three walls of heavy sailcloth around the bar. We created one wall hung with thousands of shiny CDs so that the sunlight is reflected toward the center. Even on the coldest days, it’s still warm there, enough so that folks often take breaks and lie in the snow to cool off.”

On our visit in October, we were blessed with lots and lots of sun, and despite the turning leaves, we had plenty of chances to suntan and lounge. Sunday morning found us joined by four other couples in the Adirondack chairs lined up near a large field. One couple entertained us by flying kites.

We asked some of our dinner guests about how they’ve come to enjoy clothing optional recreation and why. Missy, from Virginia, told us that it seemed to her that when she and others shed their clothes, they become more open, more honest, and less interested in hiding what they think and believe.

She said it’s as if the playing field has been leveled because we’re all naked, and there is no clothing to hide behind. Of course that would also eliminate any of the self-perceived status that may come from expensive clothes, or jewelry.

Amy Abbott said that there are two challenges that are different for women and for men when they first come to a nudist resort. For women, it’s the issue of safety. Often there is reluctance by one partner yet an enthusiasm for being naked from the other.

Commonly it’s the men who are comfortable and the woman who are shy at first. But more often than not, Amy said, the reluctant partner sheds their clothes as the comfort level increases, and by the end is as happy naked as their partner.

Lindy said that for men, sometimes their own size becomes an issue, as if it’s a competition and they are afraid of losing. But like the two-minute rule, in just a little while they see that nobody pays attention to genital size and it’s a non-issue.

    Any Season’s a Good Season

Abbott’s Glen is most popular during the summer months, when they sell campground sites for $38 per night and sometimes have as many as 50 people dancing to a local blues band in the carriage house.

But the fall is still a good season to come, especially if you’re not from New England and still marvel at the spectacular fall foliage of that time of year. No matter what the season, at Abbott’s Glen you’re assured an interesting group of happy people, all wearing a smile.

  • Antarctica’s Nudist Club

Visitors of all nationalities defy an average temperature of -50C and take part in variations of the traditional nudie run, independent scholar and author Chris Cormick revealed yesterday.

Dr Cormick spoke about the trend to the Antarctic Visions: Cultural Perspectives on the Southern Continent conference put on by the University of Tasmania this week.

He said Australians based at all three stations, Davis, Casey and Mawson, take part in the traditional “Bliz Run”, which obliges the loser of any bet or dare to strip off and run a lap of the accommodation block.

“It’s only about 100m, but even 10m would seem like a long run in the conditions,” Dr Cormick said.

New Zealanders at their summer station go skinny dipping in Lake Vanda, with a plunge in the chilly water earning membership of the Royal Lake Vanda Swim Club.

The group is rumoured to include former NZ Prime Minister Helen Clark, who gained membership before she was elected.

Americans at the Amundsen-Scott base can regularly be seen emerging from the sauna to run a naked lap of the South Pole.

The deed earns membership of the 300 Club, but only if it’s done when temperatures have plunged to below -100F.

    0001

“The idea is to run from the 200F sauna, outside, so they go through 300 degrees (F) in seconds,” Dr Cormick said.

He said he felt compelled to speak because although the practice was widely participated in, it was not officially recorded.

“Historians, authors and researchers depend on official records, but just because it isn’t in the official records doesn’t mean it’s not happening,” Dr Cormick said.

He visited Antarctica on an Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship in 2008, but declined to reveal whether he participated in a Bliz Run himself.

“There is also a strong culture of what happens on the ice stays on the ice,” he said.

  • Nudist Camp Goes Clothed After 40 Years

No more will everyone just hang out at a Manitoba nudist campground, as the park’s owners try to better cover their costs by limiting their exposure to hefty water improvement bills.

After more than four decades of a “clothing-optional” attitude, what’s been known as Crocus Grove Campground is changing its name this month to keep in step with a shift away from nudity among its users.

The newly named Sandhill Pines RV Park and Campground, about 40 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, is requiring campers to begin wearing clothes when out and about at the facility, so that its owners can try to attract more customers and maintain their site’s viability.

“It’s too bad that it’s had to go this route. That’s just the way it’s happened,” Susan Ryynanen, who owns the park with husband Ray, said Thursday.

“We’ve had declining numbers in terms of clothing-optional campers, and we have to do something differently.”

The 60-campsite park is asking users and guests to wear clothes for the first time since it opened in 1969. The owners say it’s because of new federal and provincial regulations requiring that facilities like private campgrounds chlorinate their tap water and undertake related engineering studies.

“The cost is going to be between $15,000 and $50,000, depending on the size of the campground, to comply,” explained Susan. The Rynnanens had continued to allow nudity since purchasing the park in the Rural Municipality of Brokenhead more than three years ago.

Because their revenue potential is “extremely limited” by appealing to a naturist niche market, Ryynanen said, it’s necessary to woo a wider array of campers.

“We just have to cope with the additional costs, and maintain the same size of campground,” she added at the park on Provincial Road 317, where the couple live.

“So we need to go public and expand our horizons.”

To distance the park from the nudity image, she said, they’re using advertising and signage under the Sandhill Pines name and “don’t have any affiliation with Crocus Grove at all any more.”

The end of Crocus Grove’s nudity, however, doesn’t mean campers can’t go naked anywhere in that region east of Lake Winnipeg. Ryynanen pointed out that the Patricia Beach area, a short drive north, continues to maintain a “clothing-optional” section along the lake.

The shift doesn’t appear to be steering users away.

After talking to campers who have regularly used the park, Ryynanen said about 98% have indicated they’ll hang around — even if not hanging out.

“They understand. They’re here because they love camping,” she said.

“Everybody is sad and disappointed that we can’t maintain the clothing-optional status, but the reality is that the big draw here is camping and being out in nature. It’s a bit of a change, but not a complete change.”
