  • Gay Nudist Running for Office in Sydney, Australia

Sydney gay nudist Stuart Baanstra has announced he will contend for a seat in the NSW upper house at the state election on March 26 and intends to champion the right for all people to be nude wherever and whenever.

“Being nude is the ultimate equaliser. It gives a better perspective and creates a level playing field on societal issues,” he said.

Baanstra said there is current antagonism of gay nudists with other nudists claiming gays are “ruining the nude beach culture”.

A code would be needed to accompany amendments to the Summary Offences Act, he said “to distinguish between what is acceptable and what isn’t”.

  • Nudist Swimmer Takes The Plunge

A MAN plunged naked into Darwin Harbour among jellyfish and swam out a distance before getting into difficulties and alarming onlookers.

Bystanders alerted police after the man – who stripped nude before leaping off the end of Fisherman’s Wharf – swum out 200m offshore, on Saturday at about 9pm.

Darwin Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Garry Smith said the man’s swimming appeared to falter, to witnesses’ dismay.

“Once he got out there he was looking like he was having a bit of difficulty,” Sen-Sgt Smith said.

The watch commander attended the incident, and said the “scary thing” was that torchlight revealed a number of jellyfish were floating about in the water.

By the time police arrived the man was making his own way back into the wharf. This spared Sen-Sgt Smith from having to leap into the jellyfish-infested waters to bring the nude man back.

Sen-Sgt Smith said he would not have stripped off to effect a water rescue. Apart from anything else, the long pants and shirt would have helped protect from stingers.

“(But) I would have certainly taken my utility belt off and secured that in the vehicle,” he said.

Sen-Sgt Smith said the man, once back on dry land, did not appear to be making much sense.

Police took him to Royal Darwin Hospital for a mental health assessment. Sen-Sgt Smith said the man was very lucky to have got back onshore in one piece.

  • Popular Sydney Nudist Beach Raided

A popular beach for nudists has been raided by police following community concerns over illegal behaviour.

Families with small children were among the 140 people sunbathing on Little Congwong Beach at La Perouse, in Sydney’s south, when police and National Parks and Wildlife officers arrived about 12.30pm yesterday.

About 80 people were completely naked but the children present were fully clothed.

The officers attended the beach, which is not a designated nude sunbathing area, following complaints from the community.

Little Congwong Beach is within viewing distance from Bare Island – a popular destination for tourists and locals.

Police informed nude sunbathers of their illegal behaviour, prompting them to get dressed and leave the area.

Officers returned at 4pm, which prompted more nude sunbathers to vacate the beach.

Police said legal nude bathing beaches located in the Sydney metropolitan region included Lady Bay Beach at Watsons Bay and Cobblers and Obelisk Beach at Middle Head.

  • Vanessa Amorosi’s Byron Bay Nudist Beach Tale

VANESSA Amorosi will be back on the Gold Coast this month for a couple of performances but there’s one place she won’t be going alone.

Amorosi once visited Byron Bay with her sister and ended up on a nudist beach.

“My sister is a real prude so it was really hilarious,” said Amorosi.

“She was sitting there saying `Oh my god, Vanessa that guy is naked. Oh my god, that’s his doodle’.

“She turned to me and said `do you think we should take our clothes off because everyone is staring at us?’.

“I said ‘yeah it’s part of the rules that when you step on to the nudist beach you can’t have any clothes on so if we don’t do it, we’ll probably get in trouble.”

Amorosi said they didn’t end up stripping but that is all her sister talks about when Queensland is brought up in conversation.

“I am going to take her back there when we come here together again,” Amorosi laughed.

“But I certainly won’t be going there on my own.”
