  • Where Do Nudists Keep Their Hankies? … and Other Naughty Questions You Always Wanted Answered [Paperback]

As the title suggests, there are dozens of ‘naughty’ questions answered, dealing with everything from trivial sexual questions to discussing the greatest lovers and perverts in history. The book has answers about men falling asleep after sex, and/or thinking about sex constantly. Ever wonder what all those letters and numbers mean in porn and escort sites? I found the book interesting and fun, and a pleasure to read and to get conversations cooking with your friends and family. Author Symons is a ‘kick’ and knows how to keep the chuckles rolling and to keep the reader wanting more. I read it at one sitting and then when my friends started reading it, we had to extend each chapter with our own thoughts and opinions. An entertaining book – I recommend it to others, not profound or lifted to literature, but well worth the the few bucks.

  • Nakations – Holidays For Nudists

When hikers speak of exposure they are usually referring to open mountain slopes or cliff-top paths. But in Germany’s Harz Mountains the concept is about to get a novel new definition, with a trail geared for nudist walkers to open in May.

The path will stretch 18 kilometres between the towns of Dankerode and Wippertalsperre.

The idea follows a recent ban on naked hiking in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, imposed largely in response to the number of German visitors stripping off on the region’s trails to experience nature in the full state of nature.

In Germany, the new hiking trail is another milestone in a long-established tradition of naturism. The country’s nudist Freikorperkultur (FKK) movement, a term translating as “free body culture”, is said to have around 45,000 members. In Munich’s Englischer Garten, naked lunchtime sunbathing is routine.

The tour operator Oboena specialises in naturism holidays, from lounge-about resorts to Mediterranean cruises. Last year plans were announced for the country’s first all-nudist hotel in the Black Forest town of Freudenstadt.

Disrobing for a holiday is not, however, a uniquely German experience, with so-called “nakations” becoming more mainstream across the world.

The American Association for Nude Recreation has estimated the industry’s value at about $US400 million ($444 million) a year.

On the French Atlantic coast, near the town of Le Porge, there is a six-hole golf course for the use of guests at the La Jenny naturist resort. In 2003, a one-off clothing-optional flight from Miami to Cancun was arranged by Naked Air, with about 90 passengers paying $US500 to take off their clothes as the plane took off.

But still the holiday opportunities for nuding up continue to grow. In the US a company called Bare Necessities Tour and Travel charters cruise ships for clothing-optional sea voyages, taking up to 2000 people at a time to places such as Hawaii, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

And if being naked above the water isn’t enough, there’s always Buff Divers, a travel club that organises clothing-optional diving trips. It claimed a world record for most nude divers in the water at a time – 72 people in the Turks and Caicos Islands in 2001.

By necessity, the club’s activities are held in tropical waters, with half of the participants usually choosing to dive in wetsuits and half in birthday suits.

Perhaps you prefer naked archery? Or naked yoga? Or, back in naturism’s German heartland, there’s the naked bike rides, or nacktradler, organised around Bavaria on summer weekends.

Ad Feedback In Australia, where they are traditionally more shy about revealing what they have “down under”, the options are less varied. Even so, the Australian Nudist Federation lists more than 50 affiliate naturism resorts and venues from far north Queensland to the fringes of suburban Perth.

If nothing else, a nakation makes packing a whole lot simpler. Just don’t forget the sunscreen.

  • Ageing Population Sees Decline In Naturists

The annual naturist summer festival was held at Te Marua Lodge in Upper Hutt over the weekend.

Just 35 kilometres from the stress of Wellington City, New-Zealand, the festival is the only place where people bring the bare necessities.

“It’s a level playing field once we’ve all taken our clothes off,” says naturist Judith Mercer.

    “We’re all the same underneath.”

A naturist for more than 70 years, Jeff Hatfield says it gives him a sense of freedom that he doesn’t get from wearing clothes.

“Once you’ve gotten used to swimming with no clothes on, or lying on the beach with no clothes on, it’s just not the same any other way,” he says.

While some people might screw up their face at the idea of baring all, the naturists say don’t judge it until you’ve given it a go.

“I thought it wasn’t for me until I tried it, and so until you actually do you don’t know,” says naturist June Campbell-Tong.

There are more than 1200 naturists in New Zealand and at least 130 of them belong to Te Marua in Wellington, but with an ageing population, there is a shrinkage in the overall attendance.

The president of the National Federation of Naturists, Ken Mercer, says the naked truth behind the sag in the ageing population.

The average age of a naturist is now 50, and Mr Mercer says it is a worldwide problem.

“Over in Europe there is big areas where naturism is huge, but even over there, their numbers are dwindling,” he says.

Mr Mercer denies it has been fuelled by an increase in skin cancer awareness.

“People these days are suffering more from lack of sun than from over-exposure to sun.”

But the falling numbers haven’t deterred some naturists, who continue to enjoy their breezy freedom.

  • Ontario’s Nudists Losing Place To Hang Out

By this time next month, about 150 nudists will be thrown out of the province’s oldest nudist retreat because their 100 acres of Eden is being sold to another owner.

The several dozen nudists who live within Glen Echo’s grounds on campsites got their eviction notices on Tuesday.

“We’re all very disappointed. You suddenly lose your second home, our home away from home.”

“We have to be out by Oct. 1,” said Keith Scott, a member since 1995.

The nudist movement in Ontario had its genesis with Glen Echo Park, which was founded in 1955 as a cooperative. Most in the community got their first taste of naturism at the site, which is nestled along the Oak Ridges Moraine in King Township. In its mid-1990s heyday, as many as 350 families were members. But interest in the movement has sagged across the world in recent years.

Glen Echo’s owners, Mary and Edward Todorowsky, are approaching 80. Since 2005, they’ve been trying to sell to someone within the nudist community, who would keep their sanctuary open.

But after fours years of trying and several failed offers, the Todorowskys gave up. The property was sold for a rumoured $2 million.

“Losing a club is not good for naturism,” said Stéphane Deschênes, who owns Bare Oaks. “It just means there’s less space. So many people have grown up in Glen Echo. It’s just really sad.”

There are three other nudist resorts in and around the GTA – Four Seasons, Ponderosa and Bare Oaks, which is not far from Glen Echo.

Four Seasons, which is located just south of Guelph, does have campsites available for $350-$450 a month. Like Bare Oaks, it has been undergoing a massive transformation over the past few years.

Hoping to attract a younger crowd, both resorts are moving away from the old “roughing it with nature” mentality by installing plumbing, electricity hook-ups for trailers and satellite television.

“We just added Wi-Fi,” said Four Seasons manager Tom Landers. “I’ve been talking to the owner of Bare Oaks and both of us feel that this market is in its infancy.”

The pair even discussed launching joint marketing to promote the naturist lifestyle, which Deschenes explains is about being at one with nature and not about being naked.

Reached at Glen Echo, it’s apparent Edward Todorowsky isn’t thrilled about losing the camp.

“I really have to go,” he said. “We only have a short time to move.”

“It’s very short notice. I don’t know how I’m supposed to move everything out of here in a month,” said one member, who has built a permanent cabin on his site that will likely have to be abandoned.

Meanwhile, Glen Echo members are crossing their fingers the deal will still fall through.

“Then – where are any of us supposed to go?”
