  • San Francisco Tests its Limits on Public Nudism

‘No shoes, no shirt, no service’ is a sign you see in a lot of US stores. In San Francisco, restaurateurs might soon have to add ‘no pants’ to the list, as a row flares over nudism in the vibrant heart of the city’s gay community.

On a sunny September day, Woody Miller strolls through the district, known as Castro. He’s tall and fit, with a long grey beard and heavy silver nose ring – and wearing nothing more than sneakers, a baseball cap and a watch.

‘I go naked on a nice day because I like the feel of the sun and the air on my skin,’ says Mr Miller, 55, who is one of the city’s growing number of public nudists, popularly known as Naked Guys.

‘There’s nothing obscene about the human body,’ he adds. ‘The belief that there is is something that’s taught. It’s just another form of prejudice.’ Home to the gay rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, the Castro – where sex shops coexist with trendy cafes and bars – is still one of the most free-thinking neighbourhoods in this famously liberal city.

  • Over 100 People In San Francisco Bay Area Try To Set Skinny Dipping Record

More than 100 people with nothing on but sunscreen and smiles crowded into a San Francisco Bay area swimming pool over the weekend in an attempt to set a skinny dipping record.

The 111 naked people in the pool at a Los Gatos nudist resort took part in a series of efforts on Saturday to establish a record tracked by a group calling itself the American Association For Nude Recreation.

Organizers say besides the event in Los Gatos, there were about 100 other record-breaking attempts across the country.

In order to be counted in the competition, all the participants had to be at the same location at exactly noon.

A picture taken of the gathering in Los Gatos will be submitted to determine which group broke the skinny dipping record.

  • Nude Cyclist Gets Gear Off In The Bay

A naturist who successfully appealed a conviction for riding his bike nude in Upper Hutt is set to take to the roads again – this time in Hawke’s Bay.

Nick Lowe, who is president of the Hawke’s Bay Naturist Club but hails from Wellington, was convicted and fined $200 for riding his bike nude in Upper Hutt on March 15 last year.

But he appealed his conviction and it was quashed by Justice Denis Clifford who noted Mr Lowe’s nudity had not met the test of offensive behaviour.

Mr Lowe will be back in the saddle on March 13 for World Naked Bike Ride Day for a ride from Bay View Pub to Tongoio picnic area, a distance of 14.5km.

For motorists and pedestrians not wishing to be startled or confronted by the flesh, there will be a trailer travelling in front towing a sign warning of “nude cyclists ahead”.

Mr Lowe said he was not thumbing his nose at the authorities and his nude cycling had been “tested in law”.

He had sharp words for anyone taking offence. “They need something bigger and better in their life to worry about. Anyone who says the human body is offensive has a problem.”

The ride starts at 2pm from the Bayview pub carpark. Anyone is welcome on bicycle, motorbike or car – but you must be naked.

  • Golden Gate Baker Beach, USA

Golden Gate Baker Beach is situated in the Presidio Trust area of San Francisco between Sea-Cliff and the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a fantastic view of the bridge from this nude beach, although beware the strong currents if you go for a swim. Once in the Presidio Trust, park on the Gibson Road car park and walk south along the shore for about 5 minutes to reach the nude beach area.

  • Love Is In The Air Along S.F.’s Market Street

Thousands of people dressed in neon wigs, sparkly butterfly wings, tutus – or occasionally nothing at all – and danced, hula hooped and hugged their way down San Francisco’s Market Street on Saturday for the city’s sixth annual celebration of love.

Based on Berlin’s Love Parade, San Francisco’s LoveFest was renamed this year to LovEvolution to avoid legal action from the promoters of the Love Festival in Los Angeles who had trademarked their name. But potential lawsuits – or the dire economy or the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq – didn’t appear to be on anybody’s mind.

“It’s people coming together, having fun, dancing their asses off and just forgetting the world’s troubles for a day,” said Sterling Alexander, who danced wearing silver devil horns affixed to his bald head and red, feathery wings.

Also celebrating were several people dressed as hot dogs, a man in a furry pink outfit walking on stilts, a girl giving out free hugs and bare-chested men offering free kisses.

The event shut down Market Street between Second Street and Civic Center and was expected to draw 10,000 revelers. Shoppers and tourists on the busy thoroughfare looked downright perplexed, several stopped to ask what the 20-plus floats blaring electronic music as scantily clad people gyrated on them were all about. The naked man covered in gold body paint and carrying a red bow and arrow proved particularly worthy of double-takes.

Megan Lehrer, 18, and her friends had traveled from Discovery Bay for the event and looked like extras from the movie “Flashdance” in headbands and ripped T-shirts.

“It’s cracking – it’s fun!” she said. “It’s about peace and love.”
