America’s Best Nude Beach No. 3 – Gunnison Beach – Sandy Hook, N.J.
New Jersey might not seem like the ideal place to drop your drawers, but the nude beach at Sandy Hook draws up to 5,000 sunbathers on any given summer weekend.

The beach takes its name from Gunnison Battery, a military fortress built by the government in the 1800s. The remains of the battery are still seen today, overlooking the beach. Army soldiers stationed near the battery used the beach for skinny-dipping, and when the beach eventually opened to the public, clothing remained optional.

Because Gunnison Beach remains governed by federal law, it is the only legal nude beach in the state, where nudity on state beaches was banned in 1999.

As an added bonus, if you need a little liquid courage in order to drop trou in front of thousands of strangers, alcohol is also allowed at Gunnison Beach.

America’s Best Nude Beach No. 2 – San Gregorio – San Mateo, California

Another California hot spot, San Gregorio beach is the oldest nude beach in America.

Founded in 1967, this popular nudist destination in San Mateo offers two miles of soft sand and beautiful cave cliffs. Much less populated than some of our other top spots, roughly 100 sunbathers visit San Gregorio on any given summer day.

Because San Gregorio is privately owned, expect a small admission charge. Due to strong surf, swimming is not generally recommended, but other activities are offered, including tide-pooling and surf-fishing. San Gregorio is popular with the gay community, who tend to congregate on the north end of the beach.

Regardless of sexual orientation, nude beach-goers want to avoid straying north of the “Hazardous Surf” sign, which signals the end of the clothing-optional portion of the beach. Past this point, park rangers may cite visitors for nudity.

When people think of hot sun, hot sand and hot bods in the U.S., Miami is likely the first location that comes to mind. If you thought a typical Miami beach was hot, then get ready for scorching!

Nude Cyclist Gets Gear Off In The Bay

A naturist who successfully appealed a conviction for riding his bike nude in Upper Hutt is set to take to the roads again – this time in Hawke’s Bay.

Nick Lowe, who is president of the Hawke’s Bay Naturist Club but hails from Wellington, was convicted and fined $200 for riding his bike nude in Upper Hutt on March 15 last year.

But he appealed his conviction and it was quashed by Justice Denis Clifford who noted Mr Lowe’s nudity had not met the test of offensive behaviour.

Mr Lowe will be back in the saddle on March 13 for World Naked Bike Ride Day for a ride from Bay View Pub to Tongoio picnic area, a distance of 14.5km.

For motorists and pedestrians not wishing to be startled or confronted by the flesh, there will be a trailer travelling in front towing a sign warning of “nude cyclists ahead”.

Mr Lowe said he was not thumbing his nose at the authorities and his nude cycling had been “tested in law”.

He had sharp words for anyone taking offence. “They need something bigger and better in their life to worry about. Anyone who says the human body is offensive has a problem.”

The ride starts at 2pm from the Bayview pub carpark. Anyone is welcome on bicycle, motorbike or car – but you must be naked.

Between A Rock And A Nude Place

“America is a Christian nation, and being nude has often been associated with being lewd,” Pastor Jeff Bowman told me. He wants to change that attitude. That is why, as we stood facing each other, we were both completely naked.

“The point of this spa is to help people relax in the confines of nonsexual nudity. Not that there’s anything wrong with sexual nudity, but not here,” he added. His wife, Judy, similarly non-attired, nodded in agreement.

We looked from their office out over the pools containing mineral water pumped straight from the hot springs underneath the Living Waters Spa in Palm Springs, California. Jeff and Judy, who opened the spa four years ago, were two of the nicest people you would ever meet.

Despite a surreally, oppressively quiet atmosphere, Palm Springs is America’s Nudity Central, with at least five “clothing optional” resorts within spitting distance of each other.

Taking your clothes off sounded simple but – good God – it wasn’t. Standing in the doorway to my chalet, having made it down to my boxer shorts, I had gazed out over the eight or nine unclothed forms draped around the main pool, or quietly chatting in the whirlpool bath, sporting neon drinks with cocktail umbrellas in hand. These people didn’t seem perturbed by their lack of garments; they seemed perfectly at ease with baring all. But then they weren’t British, and we are a reserved people.

After 15 minutes of strategic posture – an arm crooked at the right angle to cover, stance nonchalantly twisted so that nothing was visible – I had walked out naked as the day I was born and slipped into the whirlpool bath, where I could breathe easily in the knowledge that the bubbles would obscure everything. Love those bubbles.

And then, all of a sudden, without preamble, life became quite pleasant. I watched the Santa Rosa mountains glow a deep orange in the afternoon sun, and gazed at the rooftops of the small town that was once a weekend getaway destination for the Hollywood elite – nudism was not without its attractions.

I fell to wondering quite why so many naturist resorts should be clustered around Palm Springs. The answer was eventually supplied by a plastic-holy-virgin-on-the-dashboard cab driver: with about 20cm of rainfall each year (yes, year), it is America’s sunniest town. If you’re hot, take your clothes off. When you look at it in those terms, you have to admit it makes sense.

Baring Dare on DART Draws Stares

The Blue Line train from Union Station in Dallas to downtown Garland left right on schedule before 3 p.m Sunday.

By the time it pulled into the West End station at 3:02, Max Kuhl and his three friends had pulled their pants off.

So had Ashley Ross and Zach Mayer, right down to their skivvies and to the wide-eyed looks of fellow passengers who had no idea they’d boarded a train bound for shock humor.

In all, about 70 people – mostly in their 20s but plenty older and younger than that, too – rode DART sans pants Sunday afternoon.

According to organizers Brian Alguire and Chris Linville, it was the first time Dallas has taken part what has become a national event.

Why they did it was hard to say.

“Why not? I didn’t have anything better to do today,” Alguire said.

And it did turn out to be quite a trip.

Gathering in the sunshine beside the frozen fountain at Ferris Plaza in Dallas, the riders got their instructions.

Get on the train, act normal, nonchalant. Then drop your drawers and go on as if nothing unusual had happened.

But even before they got near a train, much less had their pants off, the crowd had drawn some attention.

A Dallas Area Rapid Transit police cruiser was parked and waiting in front of Union Station. On the platform, an officer warned people that taking their pants off was against the law.

“It’s considered disorderly conduct. You can go to jail or you can be cited,” he said.

Undaunted and eager to undress, the group separated onto different trains – the Red Line into Plano and the Blue Line into Garland.

So heading north and northeast, they rode.

But it wasn’t a ride without its hiccups.

Seconds after Kuhl, Ross and Mayer had their pants down, a woman riding with her pants very much on said she was calling the police.

Mark Kaplan, who was the one issuing directions, perhaps because he is a little older, told everyone without pants to pack up and hop off at the Akard Station.

Standing on the platform lined up in everything from racy, lacey briefs to plain old boxer shorts, it was a cold 15-minute wait for the next Blue Line run.

Ross, 19, had anticipated the chill even before she boarded the train.

“I’m a lifelong nudist. I usually stay in a warm place when being nude, though,” she said.

Once aboard and going again, it was mostly a smooth ride.

The group got a few looks and a few laughs. For the most part, though, people went about their business, pants or no pants. DART spokesman Morgan Lyons said no one was ticketed or arrested.

No one really even took notice when the sweet, serious and automated voice of DART rail announced again and again that riders should “beware of suspicious activity and unattended packages.”

Pressed for their opinion, those not in on the joke took it differently.

Osa Eke said it wasn’t a big deal, even though it was pretty funny.

“As long as it’s not too much, it’s fine. No one is affected,” he said.

Lusinda Kureir saw it much differently. She immigrated to the U.S. from Sri Lanka 10 years ago in hopes of better things.

Young people taking their pants off on a train didn’t fit well into her vision of life here.

“This is a good country. Why you do without clothes?” she asked.

The apparent answer was for a laugh. But the truer answer might have been just because it’s there.

As a 19-year old who gave his name only as “Pitts” said, it made for an interesting afternoon.

“I was on my way home from church, and I heard about it on the bus. It sounded like something to do,” he said.

Bid To Strip Away Rights At Mt Eliza Nudist Beach

Moves to boot nudists off Mt Eliza’s Sunnyside beach are bogged down in red tape.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is determined to kick nudists off the beach due to antisocial behaviour, inadequate public facilities and poor access.

Shire sustainable environment director Alex Atkins confirmed the shire had pushed the State Government for a review.

“Over a number of years the shire has certainly had issues with behaviour and we’ve made representations to the State Government that it would be time for a review,” Mr Atkins said.

He said the review should consider Victoria’s four nudist beaches and it was not the shire’s role to do it.

But Planning Minister Justin Madden’s office said the council had to do the consultation if it wanted a review.

The minister’s spokeswoman, Peta Duke, said Mr Madden was aware of the council concerns.

She said a former planning minister requested more information in 2006 and Mr Madden re-issued the request in February.

Mornington state Liberal MP David Morris told Parliament recently that Mr Madden should immediately initiate a review of the beach’s status.

Mr Morris said a “real culture of antisocial behaviour” had developed in the adjacent carpark, including flashings and lewd acts in the public toilets.

“All of these issues make its current use entirely inappropriate.”

The government declared Sunnyside a legal nudist beach in 1986.

Nudist Association of Victoria president Werner Jacob said members would fight moves to change Sunnyside’s status.

“It’s very important because it’s the only one on that side of the bay,” he said.

Golden Gate Baker Beach, USA

Golden Gate Baker Beach is situated in the Presidio Trust area of San Francisco between Sea-Cliff and the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a fantastic view of the bridge from this nude beach, although beware the strong currents if you go for a swim. Once in the Presidio Trust, park on the Gibson Road car park and walk south along the shore for about 5 minutes to reach the nude beach area.
